FCT Hospital Management Board

The Hospital Management Board is basically responsible for the delivery of secondary (curative and rehabilitative) health care services to the populace in the FCT.
It is charged with the management of the 14 General Hospitals/Clinics in the territory. These facilities are:
i. Asokoro District Hospital
ii. Maitama District Hospital
iii. Wuse General Hospital
iv. Kubwa General Hospital
v. Bwari General Hospital
vi. Kuje General Hospital
vii. Abaji General Hospital
viii. Kwali General Hospital
ix. Karshi General Hospital
x. Gwarinpa General Hospital
xi. Nyanya General Hospital
xii. Rubochi General Hospital
xiii. Karu Mental Rehabilitation Hospital
xix. Zuba Cottage Hospital

The Board is structured with the following departments:

Department of Clinical & Diagnostic
This department is charged with the responsibility of organising, supervising and co-ordinating the activities in the FCTA Hospitals.
The hospitals are involved in the provision of primary, secondary and in some cases, tertiary health care services in the core clinical fields of surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, medicine, paediatrics, and dental clinical services.
There are specialists also in the fields of ophthalmology E.N.T. and anaesthesia, also dental services and nutrition & dietetics.

Diagnostic Services Unit
This Unit provides laboratory and radiology services to patients in the hospitals/clinics.
There are other supportive specialised services in diagnostics fields, like optometry and physiotherapy.

Medical Records Unit
a. Registration of Patients & issuance of Cards
b. Documents and retrieves patients’ records/files.
c. Indexing / coding of diseases
d. Collecting and processing of hospital utilization statistics
e. Filing/safe-guarding patients’ records/folders

Department of Nursing Services
The Nursing Department has been an essential component of the Hospital Management Board. The department is responsible for the following:
(i) Co-ordinates all nursing activities in the hospitals and clinics.
(ii) Recruits, disciplines, promote trains and post Nurses and Midwives to hospitals/clinics.
(iii) Organises continuing education programmes and staff development & training.
(iv) Participates in the proposals, budgeting and provision of basic equipment and consumables in the health care institutions.
(v) Involved in community education through health promotion activities.

Department of Pharmaceutical Services
The Pharmacy Department in HMB is charged with the following duties:
a. Providing of pharmaceutical clinical services to patients in the public hospitals.
b. Coordinates the purchase of drugs, consumables, storage, distribution, and monitoring under the Drug Revolving Fund Scheme in the hospitals.
c. Provision drug information services centre for collection and dissemination of information on drugs and health matters.

Department Administration & Finance (HMB)
Charged with the following functions:
– Administration
– Discipline
– Promotion
– Training
– Posting of staff
– Staff matters/Nominal Roll
– Stationeries
– Office cleaning
– Prepare/keep financial reports and submit same to the Secretariat

Biomedical Engineering Unit
Charged with the installation, repairs and maintenance of hospital and laboratory equipment.
Inventory of medical equipment & furniture in the hospitals.
